There's a familiar moment: bags packed, ready to leave, and only then does it occur to you that the wall socket at your destination doesn't look like home. The universal adapter you grabbed at the airport plugs in fine, but the hair dryer won't turn on — or worse, something starts to smell like it's burning. Socket shape and voltage are two separate problems, and an adapter only solves one of them.

We checked the electrical specs for all 53 countries WhatsThePop tracks. Between them, there are 13 distinct plug standards, and voltage ranges from 100V to 240V. Only 17 countries match South Korea's setup (Type C/F, 220V) exactly. At the other extreme, 16 countries share none of Korea's plug types at all, meaning a completely different adapter is required. The remaining 19 sit in between — sharing one of Korea's two types while also running a second standard on the side.

Below: the countries where nothing needs to be bought, the ones that fall in a gray zone, and the ones that need a full adapter — followed by a separate note on voltage, because a plug that fits doesn't guarantee the device behind it is safe to use.

The 17 Countries Where Nothing Needs to Change

Seventeen countries use exactly the same two plug types Korea does — C and F. More than half are in continental Europe: Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Andorra, and Albania. Egypt, Iran, Georgia, Turkey, and Uzbekistan round out the Middle East and Central Asia. Indonesia is the only one in Southeast Asia.

One entry stands out: North Korea. The two Koreas share almost nothing in their travel infrastructure, but the wall socket happens to be identical — both run on the same European round-pin standard.

Pack a charger or a power strip from home for any of these 17, and it plugs straight in. No adapter required.

The 19 Countries in a Gray Zone

Nineteen countries share only one of Korea's two plug types. France, Poland, Morocco, and Tunisia use Type C but default to Type E, which has a different grounding pin, so a full adapter is still needed. Switzerland runs on the three-pin Type J. Sweden goes the other way — it's Type F only, so a Korean charger with an F-style plug fits directly, but a C-style power strip won't. Italy and Uruguay are closer still: both carry Korea's full C/F pair, just alongside an extra type (L for Italy, I and L for Uruguay).

In South America, Argentina, Brazil, and Chile share Type C but default to something else (I, N, and L respectively), while Peru mixes A and C. Thailand, Vietnam, China, India, Cambodia, and the Philippines each run multiple standards side by side depending on the building's age and location — which is exactly why traveler reviews of the same country so often disagree about whether an adapter was needed. Jordan tops the list for variety: five standards (B, C, D, F, and G) all in use at once.

This group resists a clean yes-or-no answer. A multi-standard adapter is the safer call here.

The 16 Countries With Nothing in Common

Sixteen countries share none of Korea's plug types. The United States, Canada, Mexico, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, and Japan all run flat two- or three-blade Type A/B plugs. Japan's version looks close to the American one, but the pins are subtly thinner — a US-style adapter can fit loosely enough there to cause problems.

The United Kingdom, Ireland, Cyprus, Malaysia, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates default to the bulky three-pin Type G, and Qatar mixes in Type D alongside it. Guyana runs four types at once (A, B, D, and G), and none of them overlap with Korea's. Australia stands alone on Type I, with its angled blade pair.

Heading to any of these 16, it's more reliable to search for an adapter by the letter code — A, B, G, I — than by destination name.

The Bigger Risk Isn't the Plug — It's the Voltage

The assumption that trips people up most often is that a working adapter means a safe outlet. Seven of the 53 countries — the United States, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, and Japan — run on 100–127V, roughly half of South Korea's 220V. A plug adapter changes the shape of the connection, not the voltage running through it.

Laptop chargers and phone chargers are usually rated for 100–240V and don't care either way. High-wattage heat appliances — hair dryers, straighteners — are the ones that usually aren't. Plug a 220V-only appliance into a 120V outlet and it just runs weak. Plug a 120V-only appliance into 220V with nothing but a shape adapter, and the sudden overcurrent can damage it or start a fire. Check the voltage rating printed on the device before worrying about the plug shape.

In the end there are three things worth checking: the plug type letter, the voltage, and how much of it actually matches home — wherever home is. Each country's detail page lists both directly.
