The half-truth of "winter is dry season in Southeast Asia"

Most people will tell you Southeast Asia is in its dry season while the northern hemisphere is cold. That's broadly right, but the answer changes depending on whether "winter" means December or February. Da Nang averages 338 mm of rain in December; Phu Quoc, also in Vietnam and a similar flight away, gets 68 mm. In December one is at the wet tail of its rainy season and the other is mid-dry-season.

Gather the monthly ratings from our country weather guides for just these 11 beaches and the gap is stark: in December only Phu Quoc and Phuket rate ◎ (best). In February, 10 of the 11 do — everywhere except Da Nang. We left out rainy-day counts, which this dataset overstates in the tropics, and for the Philippines' Visayas (Cebu, Bohol, Boracay) we read only the month-to-month trend because the reanalysis puts their rainfall at about twice what gauges record.

Best months at 11 beaches, pulled together from each country's weather guide. Compare the December column with February.

It's the wind: east-facing versus west-facing coasts

From November to February the north-east monsoon blows off the continent. It picks up moisture crossing the South China Sea and the Gulf of Thailand and drops it on the east-facing coasts it hits head-on: Da Nang and Nha Trang in central Vietnam, Koh Samui on the Gulf side of the Malay Peninsula. Coasts in the lee of mountains or peninsulas — west-facing ones — are in their dry season at the same time: Phuket and Langkawi on the Andaman Sea, Phu Quoc off southern Cambodia, El Nido at Palawan's north-west tip.

Opposite seasons within one country: Da Nang and Nha Trang peak in October–December, while Phu Quoc is dry from November to March.

Rain isn't Da Nang's only issue. Its December–February highs are 23.9–24.4°C, five or six degrees cooler than Phu Quoc (29.4–30.4°C), and the onshore wind is strong. Winter trips there lean towards Hoi An's old town and the Ba Na Hills rather than the beach. Da Nang's beach season proper is March to May, when rain falls off (62 mm in March) and temperatures climb.

December: a short list

For a Christmas or year-end break, Phu Quoc (68 mm) and Phuket (140 mm) are the safe bets. El Nido (158 mm) and Langkawi (164 mm) still carry some rain in early December and dry out quickly towards January. This is also the most expensive fortnight of the year, so the same beach can cost very differently either side of Christmas week.

January: the west coasts at their best

In January Phuket (78 mm), Phu Quoc (52 mm), Langkawi (83 mm) and El Nido (91 mm) are all under 100 mm, and Nha Trang (85 mm) starts to clear. Kota Kinabalu (242 mm) and Da Nang (165 mm) are still wet, and Penang (155 mm) gets nearly twice Langkawi's rain despite sitting on the same west coast of Malaysia.

February: nearly everything opens up

By February 10 of the 11 beaches rate ◎. Koh Samui drops from 223 mm in December to 60 mm, Nha Trang from 230 mm to 56 mm — roughly a quarter. Kota Kinabalu halves to 118 mm. On rain alone, February offers the widest choice of the winter.

Three Philippine beaches. The reanalysis roughly doubles Boracay's and Cebu's rain, so read the shape — falling from December to February — rather than the height.

December to February in the Philippines is the amihan, the north-east monsoon, and rain clearly eases across those months (El Nido goes from 158 mm to 36 mm). On Boracay the wind piles surf onto Bulabog Beach on the east side, which becomes a kitesurfing spot, while the hotel strip on White Beach faces west, in the lee, and stays calm. In the June–October south-west monsoon it's the other way round.

Warm, but not beach weather: Okinawa and Cairns

Two other names come up for winter sun, and both need a different yardstick. Okinawa (Naha) reaches 19.4°C on a January afternoon — about 17 degrees warmer than Seoul's 2.0°C — but that's not swimming weather. Think coastal drives and the aquarium, not the beach.

Cairns is in its southern summer — 29.9°C in January — but January is also its wettest month at 416 mm. Far North Queensland's coast is in marine stinger season (box jellyfish and Irukandji), typically November to May, and local authorities tell swimmers to stick to patrolled beaches, use the stinger enclosures and wear a full-body stinger suit. Reef trips still run, but for a lie-on-the-beach holiday June–October suits Cairns better.

Korea's 2027 Lunar New Year break: 6–9 February

(For Korean readers) Korea's 2027 Lunar New Year holiday runs Saturday 6 to Tuesday 9 February including a substitute day, per the official calendar from the Korea AeroSpace Administration. For anyone travelling then, it lands in the widest dry window for Southeast Asian beaches.

How to read these numbers

  • Data: Open-Meteo historical weather (ERA5 reanalysis), daily values for 2016–2025 averaged by month at each city's centre point — beaches on the far side of an island can differ.
  • Ratings (◎○△✕): not re-scored here; taken as-is from our Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia and Philippines weather guides, which weigh typhoons, surf and temperature as well as rainfall.
  • Rainfall limits: reanalysis tends to smear out downpours. In the Philippines' Visayas (Cebu, Bohol, Boracay) it puts rainfall at roughly twice the gauge figures, so we didn't compare their mm with other beaches. Rainy-day counts are heavily overstated in the tropics and weren't used.
  • Outside our dataset: the 2027 holiday dates come from the official Korean calendar as reported by two outlets; the stinger-season advice follows Douglas Shire Council in Queensland.

Each country's travel weather guide has the full month-by-month detail, and the country pages compare temperatures with your home city.
