Same December: 17.6 wet days in Manchester, 5.2 in Barcelona

In December, Manchester gets more than 1 mm of rain on 17.6 days. Barcelona gets it on 5.2. Edinburgh sees 2.6 hours of sunshine a day and Seville 7.5. Same continent, same Christmas season, yet one city's markets are walked under umbrellas in the dark while the other has brighter afternoons than Seoul.

Yet on cold alone, none of the 15 cities is colder than Seoul. Even Strasbourg, the coldest, averages a December high of 6.5°C and a low of 1.1°C — 3.4 degrees warmer than Seoul by day (3.1°C) and 6.6 degrees warmer at night (−5.5°C). What actually shapes a European winter trip is not temperature but daylight, rain, and the dates the markets close.

All figures are 10-year averages from Open-Meteo's ERA5 reanalysis (daily data, 2016–2025). A "rainy day" has at least 1 mm; "sunshine" is hours of actual direct sun; "daylight" is sunrise to sunset on 15 December. The cities are the ones covered in our France, Italy, Spain and UK weather guides. Market dates come from outside this dataset, and we list only those confirmed on each city's official or tourism site.

Warmer than Seoul, so why does it feel colder?

All 15 cities have higher December highs and lows than Seoul. Even the frostiest, Milan (13.9 nights below zero) and Strasbourg (13.1), have fewer than half Seoul's 28.5. Barcelona, Seville and Nice average zero.

Monthly highs and lows, Strasbourg vs Seoul — from December to February Strasbourg runs above.

There's still a reason people from Seoul remember December in London or Paris as raw. The five northern cities (Edinburgh, Manchester, Paris, London, Strasbourg) average 86–88% humidity in December against Seoul's 63%, and have 2.5–3.7 times as many rainy days (Seoul: 4.7). A damp coat and a low sun change how cold it feels more than a few degrees on the thermometer. Seoul's winter is cold but clear; north-western Europe's is milder but grey and wet.

The northern market towns are dark: 36–51% of Seoul's sunshine

The cities best known for Christmas markets are the ones with the shortest December days. Edinburgh's sun is up for 7.0 hours, 2.6 hours less than Seoul's 9.6, and within that it actually shines for just 2.6 hours. Manchester gets 2.7 hours, Paris and London 3.4, Strasbourg 3.7 — all five at 36–51% of Seoul's 7.2.

Rainy days (1 mm+) by month in three UK cities — more frequent in winter, most of all in Manchester.

Darkness isn't all downside. Market lights and decorations only come into their own after sunset, and in these cities in December the sun sets between about 3:30 and 5 p.m. With only seven or eight hours of daylight, put anything that needs light — galleries, cathedrals, viewpoints — into the morning and early afternoon, and save the markets for after dark. For photos, the half hour around sunset is best.

In the northern market towns, December is about planning for short days, not for cold.

The south is as bright as Seoul — but Italy's rain comes heavy

Three Spanish cities match or beat Seoul's December sunshine: Granada 7.9 hours, Barcelona and Seville 7.5, against Seoul's 7.2, with Nice (7.1) close behind. Seville sits at 37.4°N, practically Seoul's latitude (37.6°N), yet its December high is 16.6°C — 13.5 degrees warmer. That is how different a winter on the eastern edge of a continent can be from one on the Atlantic and Mediterranean side at the same latitude.

Monthly daytime highs in four Spanish cities — still 11–17°C in December.

Italy sits in between, with its own pattern. Rome (101 mm), Naples (107 mm) and Florence (110 mm) get more December rain than London (67 mm), but on fewer days — 10.1 in Rome and 10.6 in Naples against London's 11.6. The north gets frequent light rain; central and southern Italy get less frequent, heavier rain. Milan and Venice, by contrast, have few rainy days (7.5–7.8) but only about five hours of sunshine, and Milan has frequent sub-zero nights.

Check before the weather: when the markets close

If you fly out for the Christmas holiday, the calendar matters more than the weather. Christmas 2026 falls on a Friday, and many markets have already closed by the time a holiday-weekend arrival lands. Below are only the markets whose 2026 dates are confirmed on official or tourism-board sites (checked 30 October).

November to January at a glance: ratings from our country guides

These are the monthly ratings from our country weather guides, gathered for the market cities. Strasbourg's ◎ (best) and Paris and London's ○ in December reflect the markets and the season, not the weather — on weather alone December is little different from November or January.

Where to go, depending on what matters most

  1. If classic market atmosphere comes first: Strasbourg, Paris, London. About half of Seoul's sunshine and rain on 11 to 13 days of the month, but that is December there. Finish Strasbourg before the 24th.
  2. If you leave over the holiday (after the 25th): pick places that stay open through New Year, such as Edinburgh (to 3 January) or Madrid (to 31 December).
  3. If sunshine and walking weather come first: Barcelona, Seville, Granada. More sunshine than Seoul and highs of 14–17°C.
  4. If you want some of both: Italy. Milan and Venice are drier but dimmer, and Milan's nights are cold; Rome and Naples are warmer, but when it rains it pours.

Month-by-month detail for each city is in our France, Italy, Spain and UK weather guides. Temperatures, rain and sunshine here are 10-year averages and don't capture any particular year's cold snap or storm.
